Balgruuf the Greater is the Nord Jarl of Whiterun Hold, residing in his great hall, Dragonsreach. He is a major character in the main quest of Skyrim.

If you fail to defend the barricades, you will have to fall back and defend the drawbridge instead. Failing to defend the drawbridge has little consequences, as the quest is impossible to fail unless you die. There will be a percentage count of how many Stormcloak soldiers are left.
What happens if the Stormcloaks take whiterun?
Balgruuf will remain Jarl and the Whiterun Guard will remain as the city’s guards, but all other NPCs will act as if the city had been taken by the Stormcloaks. If Breezehome is owned before the siege, it may be lost afterwards.
Do you lose Lydia If you join the Stormcloaks?
No. You can have “Join the Stormcloaks” and “Join the Legion” both active at once, but once you join one you get an automatic quest failure for the other one.
