The other numbers and letters were random. Until near the the time that plates in this format were replaced, the age identifier letter changed just once a year – every August. So a car with the ‘R’ reg plate shown above was registered between August 1997 and July 1998, and in August 1998 the letter changed to ‘S’.

The last reg years plate was the Y Reg Year in 2001. If we wind the clock back to before 1983, ‘Suffix registrations’ were used on number plates. These are rare now – but they do crop up on classic vehicles and as personalised registrations.
