Why do schools make you write essays?

By allowing you the freedom to express yourself through your writing, the admissions officers will be able to see a real human being in ways that can’t be seen through standardized test scores, CVs or even letters of recommendation. Ultimately, that is why they ask you to write essays: to get to know you better.

Why writing an essay is important?

Essay writing is an important part of studying for a degree for three reasons: (1) It increases understanding and helps the process of learning because it pushes you, amongst other things, to clarify and sort out ideas and information, to analyse source material and to exercise critical judgement.

Why is academic writing so boring?

Academic writing is always boring, dry, formulaic, and unnecessarily complex. In many cases the writing (the form) must be simple or plain, because the ideas (the content) are by definition new and complex. The ideas themselves are meant to be the source of excitement.

Are essays useless?

The actual purpose of an essay is to determine whether you know and understand the subject matter. An essay does that in a contained format. While essays may seem useless, they aren’t. They’re short form writing that helps you collect and express your knowledge and thoughts.
